and students discuss the current exchange rate (かわせ)
of the dollar (ドル)
and yen (えん),
and relative costs in the two countries, to give students
a guide for guessing prices. ‘The Price is Right’
(Pre-task 4) game can be played to familiarise students
with price expressions. The teacher prepares item
sheets as below, and copies of the price list to give
to groups. |

| Procedure
|
- The
teacher decides on a shopping scenario and an appropriate
budget, eg.
- Shopping
for a party - パーティーをしよう (budget¥3000)
- Shopping
for an overnight stay with friends - ともだちのうちにとまろう
(budget¥3000)
- Going
on a trip - りょこうしよう(budget¥5000)
|
The
teacher can adjust the budget amount or limit the number
of items to control how long the game will take. Students
form groups of 6, and referring to the game sheet, collectively
choose what they will buy. Groups use an item sheet
such as the one above to list items they plan to buy,
and their estimation of the cost. Each student in the
group must write at least one item, with the help of
teammates if necessary. Each team announces their list
of products, pointing them out on the game sheet. 「
わたしたちは...............と...............と...............をかいました。」
The
teacher writes the products on the board as each group
announces them, for the whole class to see. The teacher
then gives the groups a copy of the price list, which
they use to check how much they spent. (The items with
their prices are listed in the order on the game sheet
to make them easier to find.) They write the actual
prices on the item sheet and work out the total
(ごうけい).
The teacher asks groups what they spent, helping where
necessary, and the group which comes closest to the
budget, eg.¥3000,
is the winner. The teacher makes sure the winning group
has calculated correctly. Alternatively, groups can
check each other’s ごうけい. |
