| さっぽろ is
the prefectural capital of ほっかいどう. One
of the most popular tourist attractions, theゆきまつり
or snow
festival is held in early February, when huge snow carvings
are displayed which have taken many days to complete.
さけ(salmon)
and かに (crab)
are the popular specialties of the district.
あおもり used
to be a centre for shipping and fishing and is located in
northern Honshu. A popular festival, ねぶたまつり
is held
in the city at the beginning of August. Large floats parade
through the city in the evening accompanied by singing,
dancing and music. The floats are then pushed into the river
at the end of the procession to cast away bad fortune or
illness. The specialty of the region is apples.
にっこう is
in the northwest of とちぎ Prefecture.
とうしょうぐう is
the shrine complex dedicated to Ieyasu Tokugawa, the founder
of the Tokugawa shogunate, and a samurai procession is held
in May and October. The lookout on the spectacular
けごんのたき(Kegon
Falls, 97m) is a famous tourist spot. おんせんまんじゅう(steamed
red bean dumplings) are familiar product.
はこね is
well known as the post-station town on the Tokaido, the
major highway during the Edo period. The town is located
in the centre of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National park, serving
as a tourist base for the lake and the mountain はこねの山.
The city has a magnificent view of Mt Fuji, and there are
several hot springs as well as many Japanese style
りょかん. おおわくだに is
a thermal area rich in sulphur where steam vents still blow.
おんせんたまご (egg
boiled in hot springs) can be purchased here for snacks.
おおさか is
the third largest city in Japan after Tokyo and Yokohama.
おおさかじょう is
located in the city and it is well known as the castle built
by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who unified Japan. たこやき(savoury
dumplings with octopus) is the speciality of the region.
きょうと is
the showplace of Japan. The capital of Japan for over a
thousand years, it has a vast number of shrines and temples,
built over the centuries. One of the most famous is the
Kinkakuji, or Golden Pavillion, a three-storey structure
covered in gold leaf. A Japanese film lot called
えいがむら,
where samurai movies are filmed, is a popular tourist attraction.
おかし (traditional
sweets) and つけもの (pickles)
are a speciality of the region.
ひろしま is
known as the place where the world’s first atomic bomb was
dropped on 6 August 1945 which destroyed 90 percent of the
city and ultimately killed 200,000 people. Hiroshima Peace
Memorial Museum located in Peace Park (へいわこうえん)
displays
objects related to the 1945 atomic bombing of the city including
photographs, damaged clothing, melted roof tiles, and stone
and cement onto which human figures were imprinted. なまがき/かき(oyster)
and おこのみやき(savoury
pancake) is the speciality of the region.
ながさき is
known as a port which was first opened to foreign trade
at the request of Dutch. ハウステンボス,
an imitation of a Dutch town is one of the most popular
tourist attractions. ながさき also
has a Peace park which was constructed as a memorial to
the victims of the atomic bomb which almost destroyed the
whole city on 9 August 1965. カステラ which
is a Portuguese style sponge cake is the speciality of the
region.
おきなわ
is a very popular destination for young people who like
water sports and scuba diving because of the beautiful beaches,
clean water and beautiful さんごしょう(coral
reefs). おきなわwas
the only part of Japan to be invaded during World War II
and was not returned to Japan until 1972. An American military
base still remains there. おきなわ
produces sugar cane (さとうきび).
