LANGUAGE
Inviting and responding to invitations using the following sentence patterns:

やまへいきませんか。

いいですね。いきましょう/そうしましょう。(accepting)
やまはちょっと・・・。
(declining)

PREPARATION
(1) The teacher lists the six places: やまうみまちこうえんデパートマクドナルド on the board. Students' knowledge of this vocabulary can be checked with cards made from the pictures on Picture Sheet (A).
(2) Cut score sheets from Score Sheet (B).

PROCEDURE

Students from groups of 4, and each member is given a different bingo sheet. Each group is given a set of three dice: (1) means of transport, (2) destinations, (3) past time expressions. Group members take turns in playing. (This can be decided by じゃんけん - stone, scissors, paper)

The first player throws three dice at once, and from the pictures and words that come up makes a sentence, which he/she says out loud.

The other members of the group listen to the sentence and cross out the words on their bingo card if they appeared.

The teacher sets a time limit, and the winner in each group is the one who has crossed out the greatest number of items in the given time.

PROCEDURE
Whole Class and pair work
The class is divided into two groups; the INVITATION group and the RESPONSE group. Each student in the INVITATION group is given a score sheet. The RESPONSE group people think of a place out of the six on the board that they would like to go to, and they keep this information to themselves.

INVITATION group people circulate around the class with their score sheet and find someone they want to invite. They try to guess where he/she would like to go and invite him/her there, using the expression
〜へいきませんか。.
If they didn't guess right and the invitation is declined with the response
〜はちょっと・・・。, they keep asking that partner up to three places. The RESPONSE people accept or decline according to their secret choice.

The INVITATION group people score some points in the following way:
* If their first guess was right and their partner accepts, they circle 3 on the score sheet.
*  If they guessed right the second time they circle 2.
* If they guessed right the third time they circle 1.
* If they didn't guess right after three invitations they score nothing for that partner.
The INVITATION group person then moves on to another partner, and repeats the process. When the INVITATION group people have tried inviting eight people, they add up their points, and the one with the highest number of points wins. The role are then reversed, and the RESPONSE group becomes the INVITATION group.

VARIATIONS
(1) The score sheet has been made for 8 partners. However, the number of columns can be reduced or increased, or a time limit can be set and the student whom scores highest within that time is the winner. Teachers can also change the list of places to suit their students.
(2) The list of places can be replaced by a list of time expressions (with a specific place) as in にちようびにやまにいきませんか。. To decline you would say にちようびはちょっと・・・。.
(3) Instead of inviting someone to go somewhere, the invitation can be to do something. The following activities are given in Picture Sheet (C): テニスをしますパーティをしますアイスクリームをたべますえいがをみますジュースをのみます and おんがくをききます. The response then needs to be changed to いいですね。そうしましょう。or verb masu-stem+mashoo (eg.たべましょう。) for acceptance or (noun, eg. テニスえいが) はちょっと・・・。 for declining.
(4) Here is another way of practicing inviting if you would like to combine places and activities.

PREPARATION
Make two sets of cards from the pictures on Picture Sheet (A) and (C). (You will need to find more pictures if you have more than 24 students in the class.)

PROCEDURE
Pair work
Every student gets one picvure card. Students circulate and invite each other to go somewhere or do something according to their card until they find a partner who has the same picture card.

VARIATION
The teacher prepares sets of picture cards. For a class of 20, for example, you might use 4 each of 5 different place cards. Each student is given one card at random. Students circulate, inviting each other and finding students who have the same picture card. The aim is for students to form groups of all people with the same place card as quickly as possible.
